Underfloor heating (UFH) offers an alternative to radiators in bathrooms, kitchens or an entire house – or simply a means to warm up a cold floor in winter.

An UFH system can sit beneath pretty much any type of flooring, including stone, tile, wood or even some carpeted surfaces, however, the efficiency of the UFH will vary dependent upon the flooring type.
With a water-based UFH system, a series of pipes connected to your heating source circulate warm water throughout the floor to heat the space. Typically, you can connect the UFH pipes to an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) or Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP). UFH works by connecting pipes laid under the floor to a manifold and then to your heating system. It can also be fitted to a thermostat or zone controls so that you can regulate the temperature.
UFH is typically more energy efficient than radiators and therefore less expensive to run. This is because the heat emitted from an UFH system is more evenly distributed compared to a single radiator, and so the system can operate at a lower water temperature. The floor should be properly prepared and insulated to make the system work efficiently. There needs to be enough space to accommodate the pipework so you might have to elevate the floor level, especially if it’s being retrofitted in a room that already exists. Because of this, it’s easier to install UFH in a new build as these adjustments can be taken into consideration from the start.
Underfloor heating is mainly used in solid floors but using a plate system can be installed on suspended floors.
