Renewable Energy such as Geothermal, Solar, Hydroelectric and Biomass all have something in common, they provide substantial benefits for our climate, our health, and our economy.

Each source of renewable energy has unique benefits and costs; OPC specialise in Ground Source Heat Pumps, Air Source Heat Pumps and Solar. There are many benefits associated with these energy saving technologies such as little or no global warming emissions.

Human activity is overloading our atmosphere with carbon dioxide and other global warming emissions, which trap heat, steadily drive up the planet’s temperature and create significant and harmful impacts on our health our environment and our climate.

The UK government have launched various incentives over the last 5 years to help the end user afford some of these technologies.

About the Domestic Scheme

The Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) launched on April 9th 2014. The scheme has been designed to drive forward uptake of renewable heat technologies such as Ground Source Heat Pumps and Air Source Heat Pumps in homes across Great Britain to cut carbon; help meet renewables targets and save money on fuel bills.

Payments will be made on a quarterly basis for seven years. The tariffs have been set at a level that reflects the expected cost of renewable heat generation over 20 years. In most cases, payments will be made based on estimated (deemed) heat demand of the property. DECC will offer an extra, set payment of £200 per year where metering and monitoring support packages are required for biomass boilers.

Eligible Applicants

The scheme is available to people who own the homes they live in, private and registered social landlords and self-builders. Anyone who has installed an eligible renewable heat technology since 15 July 2009 and meets the scheme eligibility criteria should be able to join.

Application Process Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)

To be eligible for the Domestic RHI, you will need to have had an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). The EPC is the proof OFGEM needs to prove that your property is assessed as a domestic ‘dwelling’. Without one you can’t apply and won’t be able to join the scheme.

In order to gain an EPC, applicants need to have completed a Green Deal Assessment. Applicants must ensure they have met minimum loft (250mm) and cavity or solid wall insulation requirements, where appropriate. From the Green Deal Assessment, an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) is issued as proof of measures having been made and defines the heat demand for the property.

MCS Accredited & RHI Eligible

All of the Heat Pumps that OPC provide are MCS accredited, providing eligibility for the RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) and access to ECO funding where applicable.

Ground & Air Source Heat Pumps

  • GSHP’s & ASHP’S provide 100% of your heating and hot water needs all year round, without the need for immersion heaters, which reduces energy bills even further.
  • Unlike gas and oil boilers, they deliver heat at lower temperatures over much longer periods. During the winter the heat pump may need to be on constantly to heat your home efficiently. You will also notice that radiators won’t feel as hot to the touch as they might do when you are using a gas or oil boiler – this is perfectly normal.
  • Low cost of ownership – Heat Pumps are designed to run on minimal energy consumption and when designed correctly could be efficient enough to produce 3-5kW of heat from as little as 1kw of electricity, therefore decreasing your energy bills.
  • Heat Pumps run on electric only, therefore there is no need for fuel deliveries and you
    can avoid the additional standing charges for multiple fuels.
  • Minimal maintenance requirements – Heat Pumps are designed to be left alone, and require minimal routine maintenance.
  • Due to the low stress and non-moving components within a heat pump, the lifespan is extended compared to traditional heating systems.
  • Reduced CO² emissions from a decrease in energy consumption.
  • No noxious gases, odours or risk of combustion
  • Constant and steady heating and hot water 24/7 eliminates cold spots and helps reduce running costs.
  • Savings against traditional heating systems such as electric, oil or LPG can be as much as 75%.
  • Clean, green, renewable heat energy at its most efficient.

MCS Accredited & Feed In Tariffs (FIT)

The Feed-in Tariffs (FITs) scheme is a UK Government scheme designed to encourage uptake of a range of small-scale renewable and low-carbon electricity generation technologies.

Under FITs, you could be paid for the electricity you generate if you install or have installed an eligible system like solar PV, a wind or hydro turbine, or micro CHP.

How much could I receive through FITs?

If you are eligible to receive FITs payments you will benefit in three ways:

  • Generation tariff: your energy supplier will pay you a set rate for each unit (or kWh) of electricity you generate. Once your system has been registered, the tariff levels are guaranteed for the period of the tariff (up to 20 years) and are index-linked.
  • Export tariff: your energy supplier will pay you a further rate for each unit you export back to the electricity grid, so you can sell any electricity you generate but don’t use yourself. At some stage smart meters will be installed to measure what you export, but until then it is estimated as being 50 per cent (75 per cent for hydro) of the electricity you generate (only systems above 30kWp need to have an export meter fitted, and a domestic system is unlikely to be that big).
  • Energy bill savings: you will be making savings on your electricity bills because generating electricity to power your appliances means you don’t have to buy as much electricity from your energy supplier.
